Revelation of Jesus and the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John: Sue Earl

In the gospel of John, God is revealed to us as:
  • God the Father: Jesus is submitted to God and only does what he sees his Father God doing; God is loving and kind and forgiving. God is light and life and eternal. God has no limit.
  • Jesus the Son of God: who is the Word made flesh to reveal God to us and make it possible for us to have a relationship with God by believing in him:
  • God the Holy Spirit: who is the same as Jesus and empowers us to be saved and to live in God's authority and power. God gives us the limitless spirit without limit.

ABOUT the man JOHN: John, known as the disciple Jesus loved. John had a revelation of how much he was loved by Jesus and he rested in that love. John wrote this gospel approximately 90AD, about 30 years after the other 3, or synoptic gospels were written. 90% of it's content is different to the other gospels.

John was a Jew, the son of Zebedee (Matthew 4:21) and one of the 12 original disciples. He was he one who Jesus told to look after his mother when he died. Jesus cares personally about each one of us. He does not leave us alone, and he places us into human families and relationships that care for us and help us to belong. Jesus knows and Jesus cares and he asks people to care. He works through people as well as through his Holy Spirit. (John 19:25-27)

PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK: John wrote this book to reveal that Jesus Christ was truly the son of God so people may believe in him and have eternal life. (John 20:30-31)

  • Jesus is revealed as the light of the world, the Word of God (made flesh), the creator of the world, the way(there is no other way to God but through Jesus), he is the TRUTH and the LIFE.
  • Jesus is introduced as God; the Word of God. John 1:14 reveals Jesus as the Word become flesh to live amongst us. God became one of us so he could live with us and get to know us and reach us so we can once again become God's children. Jesus is the light shining in the darkness, to show us the way, to heal and save us, to bring hope where all is lost and light where all is darkness.
  • The world did not recognize him or accept him, yet those who believe in him become children of God. There was no room for Jesus when he came to earth and the Jews had no room for him in their hearts so they wanted to kill him. John 8:37Jesus the truth came to set us free from our slavery to sin and the power of death that controls our lives. He came to free us from our false father, the devil and liar and join us back with our true Father, God, the truth.
  • Jesus claimed to be God, and referred to himself by the name of God: John 8:58 "I am" The reason the Jews killed Jesus was that he claimed to be GOD. YHYH
  • Jesus totally identified with God in a submissive relationship to him and only did what his Father did. He trusted and believed what his Father said about him and said God was his witness.
  • Jesus is the bread of life and whoever eats of him will have eternal life. (John 6:35-58 )Moses gave the law which the Jews were trusting in for salvation. Jesus came with grace and truth to be salvation for us. (John 1:16-18) Moses did not give manna or bread from heaven, God the Father gives bread from heaven. True bread is the ONE who comes down from heaven and brings life. (John 6:32-33)

  • He also revealed the promise of the Holy Spirit, referred to as the new wine and living water. If we drink from this living water we will never thirst again, (John 4:13-14) (John 7:37-39) There is a progressive revelation of the Holy Spirit, from the miracles he performed and his teaching, until the 4 chapter exegesis and prayer revealing his replacement, the Holy Spirit. (John 14-17)
  • The Holy Spirit is the same as Jesus -paraclete -He comes so we will not be left as orphans, but so we can be born again and adopted by God and have God's Spirit live within us. (1 Corinthians 2) The only way to have God's Spirit live in us and to be able to enter the presence of God is to be born again by God's spirit. The old flesh cannot relate to God or know God. The old flesh is unable to have God's presence or God's spirit live in us. John 3:3-8
  • He is our counselor, who walks beside us and leads us the right way, the Spirit of truth, who comes from the Father and knows everything about the Jesus to us. He reveals not only the Father to us, but also all that the Father knows.
  • The Holy Sprit's work is to convict the world of sin, because we do not believe in Jesus; righteousnessthat comes only from Jesus as a free gift, because Jesus came from the Father and was able to return to the Father, Jesus fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law and opened the way so we could again enter the presence of God (curtain to Holy of Holies was torn from top to bottom at his death) and Judgment; because Satan, the prince of this world has been judged and condemned. Judgment has already occurred.

OUTLINE of the Book of John and Message it reveals:

John 1- Jesus is the Word and was not only with God in the beginning - he was God and made all things.
He is the light that brings life to ALL MEN.

He is the word who became flesh and lived with mankind.

Moses brought the law, but Jesus brought both grace and truth.

Jesus came to reveal God the Father to us - so we could get to know God.

John came to prepare the way for Jesus. At Jesus baptism, the Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove and remained in him -Jesus was baptized or filled with the Spirit.

Jesus is the ONE WHO BAPTIZES IN THE SPIRIT: John had been told - the one who you see the spirit come down on like a dove and remain on him - He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is revealed as the son of God and the son of Man- because he could SEE- Jesus prophesied: you will SEE heaven open and angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

The Holy Spirit reveals the things of God to us.

John 2: Jesus turns water into wine - His very first miracle: The Holy Spirit is the new wine: Jesus prophesies with his first miracle the coming of the new wine -the Holy Spirit.

The best is kept to last.

The old covenant will be turned into a new covenant.
What was only water will be turned into new wine. Matthew 13: New wine needs to be poured into new wine skins. The new covenant has n new wine and is different to old - we are made new, because flesh gives birth to nothing, but spirit gives birth to life. We are born again or made new so we can carry to new wine.

Men saw Jesus miracles after he was baptized in the Spirit, that revealed to mankind who he was.

John 3:
Jesus reveals we must be born again by the Holy Spirit to enter the Kingdom of God. The only way we can see God is by being born anew of the spirit.

Flesh can only give birth to things in the flesh. It cannot produce eternal life or things of God. It is temporary and will not last forever.

The Spirit gives birth to the things of the Spirit. We need to be made new to see God and the things of God.

The flesh can't please God, but the Spirit sees God, knows God and brings God life to everything it touches.

Believing in Jesus gives us eternal life.

Jesus is the light. this light shows us who we are. The light reveals and heals. If we remain in the light, the light shows that what we have done has been done by God.

Jesus, who speaks the truthful Word of God, gives the spirit without limit. There is NO LIMIT to the spirit. He lasts forever and never ends. You can never run our of the spirit of God - although you may need to get filled up again.

John 4:
Jesus reveals himself to the Gentiles: to a Samaritan woman, who had many husbands.

Jesus cameto reach all nations and to reach the unacceptable. A woman and an unacceptable woman.

The woman was drawing natural water, in her own strength, away from every way else, because she was rejected by both her own people and by the Jews.

Jesus asked her for water, which got her interest. Then he told her he had eternal water, that would fulfill her needs forever, that would become a live giving spring of water within her. this would bring eternal life.

Jesus was prophesying the Holy Spirit.

Jesus proceeds to tell her that where you worship is not so important, but how you worship. Salvation comes from the Jews.

The only acceptable worship to God is in spirit and in truth, because he is spirit and in truth. Jesus is the truth and we need the spirit to worship God with.

Jesus reveals he is the Messiah to her and he will reveal the truth so we can all be set free.

Jesus said that his work was to do the will of God.

John 5: Jesus heals and reveals the love that God has for people. Jesus reflects God and can only do what God he sees God doing.

We can all do what we see. Seeing enables us to do.

John 5:24Whoever hears and receives Jesus word and believes in Jesus will not be condemned, but pass from death to life.

Accept praise from God, not men.

John 6: Jesus feeds 5000
Jesus is our food -the bread of life. John 6:27,35, Jesus food is the only food that eternally satisfies. You will never thirst again, nor hunger again, if you eat of him. The cravings of the world, the flesh are temporarily satisfied but then they crave more and more to be fulfilled. This is how addictions work. At first a little fulfills, but then more is needed to satisfy. The addiction craves to the point that it consumes all.

Jesus is the opposite. He fulfills and our desires are meet by him in such a way that all we desire is him. He satisfies our every need eternally and fully -not an empty promise, but a complete fulfilling answer.

John 6:29The work of God is to believe in the one he sent.

The Spirit gives life - the flesh counts for nothing. John 6:63Jesus words are spirit and life.

John 7:37-39Jesus promises again that those who thirst after him and drink form him will never thirst again. Whoever believes in Jesus, streams of living water will flow out from him. This is the promise of the spirit that will come once Jesus has been glorified.

We lost our glory, the reflection of the glory of God, which was our covering, when we fell. Jesus came:
1. His death paid the price for sin and opened the way back to God.
2. His resurrection conquered death and gave us new life.
3. His ascension released the spirit of God so that we can all be filled with the spirit. Jesus was glorified when he ascended. We will be glorified when he comes back again for the last time.

John 8Adulterous woman accused and set free from accusation.
John 8:12Jesus; the light of the world. Whoever follows Jesus will have the light of life and never walk in darkness.

John 8:31-32. John 8:34-37Jesus: came from God to us free from the slavery of sin. The truth sets us free and Jesus is the truth and spoke the truth of God's word. People want to kill love, kill Jesus, because they have no room for him in their hearts. If you let your heart be filled with darkness, evil, fear, jealousy, self, you will have no room for Jesus.

The devil is a liar and the father of lies. He works by lying and deceit. When we lie and believe his lies we are serving him and not God.

If we belong to God, we hear God's word and if we keep Jesus word we will never see death. Give honor and glory to God.

John 8:58Jesus reveals himself as God - "I am" - the name of God. the Jewish required instant death for anyone who claimed to be God and wasn't, so the Jews believed they were defending the name of God in attempting to kill Jesus.

John 9: Jesus opens the eyes of a blind man. Jesus came to open all of our eyes so we can see the truth and believe in Jesus.

John 10: Jesus is the true shepherd and the gate by which we enter into salvation. His sheep know his voice and follow him, because he loves them.
John 10:27-28Jesus is in the father and the father in Him.

John 11: Death and resurrection of Lazarus. this sickness will not end in death, but will bring glory to God.
John 11:49-52 Prophesy of Jesus death -one man for many people and sins by the high priest.

John 12Jesus anointed by Mary, Entering into Jerusalem upon a donkey

John 13Jesus washes the disciples feet. Jesus predicts his betrayal and Judas leaves. Jesus announces that he is about to be glorified.
A new command: love one another as I have loved you.

John 14: John 14:1Trust God for Jesus is going to prepare a place for you.
John 14:6Jesus is the way, the truth and the light. He is the only way to the Father. Jesus and the Father are one -If you see Jesus, you see the Father.
John 14:12-14Because Jesus is going back we will do greater things than he has done. If we ask in Jesus name to bring glory to God, it will be done.
John 14:15-21Jesus promises we will not be left on our own when he goes. the Father will give a counselor -a comforter to be with us forever -the Spirit of truth.
The world doesn't accept him because it can't see him or know him, but we will know him because he lives with us and will always be with us.
Jesus doesn't leave us as orphans. because he lives and is risen from the dead. we also live resurrection lives.
If we love Jesus we will obey his commands. Obedience follows love and acceptance, because his love and kindness draw us and we want to serve him because of his love.
Being in love is like that. You want to please the one you love.

John 14:26-27
The Holy Spirit, the counselor, comes in the name of Jesus. He teaches us all things and reminds us of all that Jesus says. God's peace guards and protects us.
The father is greater than Jesus.

John 15: Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We bear fruit by remaining connected to him. A separated branch can not bear fruit.
When we are joined to Jesus we will bear much fruit. Apart form Jesus, we can do nothing. If we remain in Jesus and his words remain in us, we will bear much fruit. This brings glory to God -when we bear a lot of fruit.
John 15:12-13
John 15:15-16Jesus makes us his friends, no longer his servants by letting us know God and everything God has taught him. A servant doesn't know or understand about his master's business, but a friend shares everything and knows everything about the other person. god has chosen us -to go and bear much fruit.

We are separate from the world so the world doesn't understand us and hates us without reason.

John 15:26-27The Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus.

John 16Jesus is going so that the Holy Spirit, the counselor can come.
John 16:7-11role of counselor
1. convict of sin because the world does not believe in Jesus
2. reveal righteousness -because Jesus returns to the Father He opens the way back to God and we are declared righteous, by his righteousness and not our own
3. judgment -Satan, the prince of the world is judged and stands condemned. All who follow him receive the same judgment.

John 16:13-15The Spirit of truth guide us into all truth. He brings glory to God and only speaks what God reveals to him. All that belongs to God, belongs to Jesus. All that Jesus, belongs to the Spirit.

John 17: Jesus prayer to reveal God's glory to the world.
He prays for protection and sanctification of the disciples.
He prays for unity or oneness so that we may be one as God and Jesus are one. This lets the world know that God loves them.

John 18Jesus arrested at Gesthemane and judged before the high priest and Pilate.
